Uniting communities through the simple act of sharing a meal

We are a team of dedicated SOAS students and volunteers. The Ramadan Tent Project is an award-winning initiative founded by SOAS students, which aims to participate in social change by creating bridges between individuals, bringing together communities, and fostering interfaith dialogue through our flagship project, Open Iftar.

What is open Iftar?

First launched in 2013, we set up an Open Iftar tent at SOAS and invited the public, Muslims and non-Muslims, to break fast with us each day during the holy month of Ramadan. We worked with homeless shelters to invite those in need to share a meal with us and delivered food to the shelters themselves.

Working together we were able to unite different communities through the simple act of a sharing a meal.

Thanks to generous donations, we have been running Open Iftar every year since 2013, creating a traditional Ramadan atmosphere in the heart of London, sharing meals, promoting interfaith dialogue, connecting neighbours and undertaking charitable endeavours.

We welcome all communities, celebrate diversity of cultures and provide a platform for discussion, by inviting distinguished guests to speak at the Open Iftar tent.

"a fresh, inspiring, noble and much needed project"
Mehdi Hasan, Al Jazeera Presenter/Journalist

This year we hope to host a talk by a different speaker each evening to make up a 'TENT Talks' series to continue fostering interfaith dialogue.

It is only through donations that we have been able to run Open Iftar and we have served over 10,000 meals since 2013.

The success of the project has inspired Open Iftar tents in Manchester, Plymouth, Istanbul and Ndola, and with your help we hope to make Open Iftar 2015 in London the biggest yet.

Where will the money go?

  • Food costs (water, dates, food parcels, fruits)
  • Fuel cost for food deliveries to homeless shelters
  • The costs of the Tent
  • Lighting and sound system
  • Banners, leaflets and other informative materials
  • Tent supplies (cutlery, paper plates, napkins) and logistical costs
  • Towards a continuation of our work to foster interfaith dialogue and build community cohesion

We have some cool rewards to give out during Ramadan if you can support us, but we invite everyone to come along to share iftar with us and discover the community spirit :)  Help us make Open Iftar 2015 happen!

Please share this project with everyone you know! The more people who know about us, the more likely we are to make Open Iftar 2015 happen!
