We are a group of SOAS Anthropology students and we are raising money to keep the Helen Kanitkar Library running at SOAS
Dr Helen Kanitkar was for many years a Lektor in the Department of Anthropology at SOAS. Students and staff from that period will recall the warmth and pastoral care she extended to generations of students. No knock on her door ever came at an inconvenient moment. When Dr Kanitkar passed away in 2001, her husband Hemant funded the refurbishment of the departmental library, which has been Helen's particular love. Additionally, he donated 800 of her books to what was reopened as the Helen Kanitkar Library and Research Centre (HKL) - Anthropology's Departmental Library at the School of Oriental and African Studies. The library has become a space for students to gain support, access past dissertations, and work alongside peers. It cannot be stated enough how helpful the HKL has become to many students not being overwhelmed or anxious about their studies due to the support one receives from other students through the library. Any donation goes towards the continued operation of this vital space!
The HKL contains a LARGE number OF valuable resources to SOAS students
Copies of popular anthropological texts used on BA and MA courses, as well as videos and other resources have proved vital for generations of SOAS Anthropology students. Particularly valuable to current students are the outstanding examples of BA Independent Study Projects, MA dissertations, MPhil upgrade documents and PhD theses from which inspiration and guidance can be taken.
The HKL is also a study place for an anthropologist, somewhere for writing and research, as well as for informal meetings and the exchange of ideas between BA, MA and research students.
In the words of one SOAS student, 'the HKL has been fundamental to any and all success in my degree programme'.
It is more than just a library!
The HKL is more than just a space with books and dissertations. We have begun hosting a dissertation lecture where undergraduate students can present their dissertations to the wider anthropology student body, giving a chance to focus ones ideas and also inspires students across years. Additionally the library has begun holding reading groups for students in the evening giving people a chance to talk openly about readings outside of formal academic settings. Finally the library, as a space where students can feel free to talk and ask questions while studying becomes a place for interaction and inspiration.
18 years on, we have exhausted the legacy left by both Dr Kanitkar and her husband - we need your help!
Your donation will go to the continued operation of the library so that we may keep the space open and accessible to all anthropology students at SOAS.
Any donation will help!
